A lot of mammals live in and around Essen. I’ve even seen larger animals such as foxes in broad daylight in the middle of the city, right by the A40 motorway city centre exit.
Bats are my constant companions in the evening and at night, especially on and around the river Ruhr.
The rarest mammal in Essen is probably the garden dormouse, which has somehow managed to come to Borbeck, although it is otherwise very sparsely distributed in Germany, as you can see here. I have not yet been able to record the little Zorros in the wild, but I was able to spend time with my microphones and a few young dormice at a animal care centre that takes in injured animals.
However, the animal that I have particularly enjoyed recording in recent years is the eurasian hedgehog. In Essen, as everywhere else in Germany, their population numbers are in sharp decline. This is certainly due to many factors, such as the disappearance of their food, the decline in insects. 75% of flying insects have disappeared in recent years. In addition, there are fewer and fewer habitats for hedgehogs in tidy gardens. Native wild plants and a deadwood hedge as well as a beetle cellar in our garden are a tiny try to help. And indeed, the hedgehogs still feel at home here.
One of the rewards we got was a pair of hedgehogs doing a mating dance. The male hedgehog walked in circles around the female for a very long time (more than an hour). The next morning I was able to observe a really well-worn ring in the tall grass. The hedgehog was sniffing incessantly while walking. I initially recorded the sound from a great distance so as not to disturb them, but they were so focussed that I was able to approach them carefully. Here is an excerpt from this recording:
The hedgehog pictured is a one eyed rescue, that I nurtured with the vet and set free.

Eine Menge Säugetiere leben in und um Essen. Selbst größere Tiere wie Füchse konnte ich schon mitten in der Stadt, direkt an der Ausfahrt Zentrum der A40, am helllichten Tag, beobachten.
Fledermäuse sind Abends und Nachts mein ständiger Begleiter, vor allem auf und um die Ruhr herum.
Das seltenste Säugetier in Essen, dürfte wohl der Gartenschläfer sein, der es irgendwie geschafft hat nach Borbeck zu kommen, obwohl es sonst in Deutschland sehr spärlich verbreitet ist, wie man hier sehen kann. In der Natur konnte ich den kleinen Zorro noch nicht aufnehmen, aber bei einer Aufzuchtstation, die verletzte Tiere aufnimmt, durfte ich Zeit mit meinen Mikrofonen und ein paar jungen Bilchen verbringen.
Das Tier, das ich aber besonders gerne aufgenommen habe die letzten Jahre sind Braunbrustigel. Auch sie gehen in Essen, wie überall in Deutschland stark im Bestand zurück. Das liegt sicherlich an vielen Faktoren, wie dem verschwinden ihrer Nahrung, dem Insektenschwund. 75% der Fluginsekten sind in den letzten Jahren verschwunden. Dazu kommt, dass auch immer weniger Lebensräume für den Igel selbst in den aufgeräumten Gärten zu finden sind. Heimische Wildpflanzen und eine Totholzhecke sowie ein Käferkeller in unserem Garten sind da eine kleine Hilfe. Und in der Tat fühlen sich die Igel bei uns noch wohl.
Belohnt wurde ich unter anderem mit einem Igel Paar beim Balztanz. Dabei ist der männliche Igel über einen sehr langen Zeitraum (mehr als eine Stunde) im Kreis um das Weibchen gelaufen. Im hohen Gras konnte ich am nächsten morgen einen richtig ausgetretenen Ring beobachten. Dabei hat der Igel unablässig geschnauft. Ich habe zunächst aus großer Entfernung aufgenommen, um nicht zu stören, aber die beiden waren so fokussiert, dass ich mich vorsichtig nähern konnte. Hier ist ein Ausschnitt aus dieser Aufnahme:
Der Igel im Bild ist ein einäugiger geretteter Igel, den ich mit einer Tierärztin zusammen behandelt und nach erfolgreicher Behandlung zurück in die Natur gesetzt habe.
