Together with the field recordist Melissa Pons from Portugal, I have been working on a sound art project around the theme of wolves for the last four years. This resulted in the record “Of Wolves and People”, which was released on 21st of July on recycled vinyl & digitally by Gruenrekorder. It can be ordered here or at the end of the blog post.

My contribution, “GW954f” is about the she-wolf “Gloria”, the first wolf in the Ruhr area for 160 years. For this, I intensively visited her territory around the Kirchheller Heide for more than three years. The Kirchheller Heide is a beautiful place in the Ruhr area, mostly in Bottrop but also bordering Dinslaken, Oberhausen & Gahlen. As a digital map I have included the legendary “Riss-Karte Gahlen” this time instead of a map of my own. This served as a starting point for my search for local sounds and interview partners. Attention, if you click on the symbols, explicit pictures of attacked and hurt wild and grazing animals may appear.

My first contact with the area in 2019 was a nightingale, which can also be heard singing in slow motion in my “Birds” post here. Immediately I fell in love with the structures on site. Sunken lakes benefiting from mining damage, moors, forests, sand pits and pastures offer a high biodiversity and red deer, bluethroats and even the wolf feel at home here. The numerous water bodies ensure a high density and diversity of amphibian species.

In addition to unique nature, interviews with conservationists, forestry workers, hunters, grazers and local residents brought me closer to the topic. A complex issue in which the wolf is often more of a symbolic animal than a cause of conflict.

Despite, or perhaps because of, the wolf problem, the Kirchheller Heide is always worth a trip from Essen, especially by bicycle. Good places to start your journey are the Schwarze Heide airfield, the Heidhof Forest Competence Centre or the Teufelssteine (Devil’s Stones).

Here you can hear an excerpt from my collage; the working noise in the background is the construction of a wolf-repellent fence, that I built together with WikiWolves e.V. to protect a flock of sheep. The material for the fence construction is funded by the state, but the labour is not, and this is where WikiWolves steps in with volunteers and the motto: “Protection of grazing animals is protection of wolves”. Digging underburial protection, pulling strands and setting posts is physical work that should not be underestimated.

My collage is an acoustic – artistic approach to the wolf’s environment, surrounded by nature, ultra-frequency sounds (wolves hear up to 50khz) and human structures, and probably quite oblivious to the excitement surrounding its breed.

Zusammen mit der Field Recordist Melissa Pons aus Portugal habe ich in den letzten vier Jahren an einem Klangkunstprojekt rund um das Thema Wolf gearbeitet. Daraus ist die Platte “Of Wolves and People” entstanden, die am 21.Juli auf recyceltem Vinyl & digital bei Gruenrekorder veröffentlicht wurde. Sie ist hier oder am Ende des Blog-Posts zu bestellen.

Mein Beitrag, “GW954f” handelt von der Wölfin “Gloria”, die erste Wölfin im Ruhrgebiet seit 160 Jahren. Dafür habe ich über drei Jahre intensiv ihr Territorium rund um die Kirchheller Heide besucht. Die Kirchheller Heide ist ein wunderschöner Platz im Ruhrgebiet, zum großen Teil in Bottrop aber auch an Dinslaken, Oberhausen & Gahlen grenzend. Als Karte habe ich die sagenumworbene “Riss-Karte Gahlen” dieses Mal anstelle einer eigenen Karte eingefügt. Diese diente mir bei meinen Suchen nach Klängen und Interview-PartnerInnen vor Ort als Ausgangspunkt. Achtung, wenn man auf die Riss-Symbole klickt können explizite Bilder von angefallenen Wild- und Weidetieren auftauchen.

Mein erster Kontakt mit der Heide war 2019 eine Nachtigall, die auch hier in meinem “Birds“ Post im Slowmotion-Gesang zu hören ist. Sofort habe ich mich in die Strukturen vor Ort verliebt. Eingesunkene Seen die von Bergbauschäden profitieren, Moore, Wälder, Sandgruben und Weideflächen haben eine hohe Biodiversität und Rotwild, Blaukehlchen und eben auch der Wolf fühlen sich hier wohl. Die zahlreichen Gewässer sorgen für eine hohe Dichte und Vielfalt an Amphibien Arten.

Neben einzigartiger Natur haben mich Interviews mit NaturschützerInnen, Forst-Arbeitern, Jägern, WeidetierhalterInnen und AnwohnerInnen dem Thema näher gebracht. Ein komplexer Sachverhalt in der der Wolf oft eher Symboltier als Ursache von Konflikten ist.

Trotz oder gerade wegen der Problematik mit dem Wolf ist die Kirchheller Heide, gerade mit dem Fahrrad, immer einen Ausflug aus Essen wert. Gute Anlaufstellen sind der Flugplatz Schwarze Heide, das Waldkompetenzzentrum Heidhof oder die Teufelssteine.

Hier gibt es einen Ausschnitt aus meiner Kollage zu hören, bei dem im Hintergrund zu hörenden Arbeitsgeräuschen handelt es sich um den Bau einen wolfsabweisenden Zaunes, den ich zusammen mit dem WikiWolves e.V. vorgenommen habe um eine Herde Schafe zu schützen. Denn das Material für den Zaunbau wird vom Land gefördert, der Arbeitseinsatz allerdings nicht und hier springt WikiWolves mit freiwilligen Helfern und dem Leitsatz: “Weidetierschutz ist Wolfsschutz” ein. Untergrabungsschutz einbuddeln, Litzen ziehen und Pfosten setzen sind eine nicht zu unterschätzende körperliche Arbeit.

Meine Kollage ist eine akustische künstlerische Annäherung an die Umgebung des Wolfes, der von Natur, ultrafrequenten Geräuschen (Wölfe hören bis 50khz) und menschlichen Strukturen umgeben ist und vermutlich recht wenig von der Aufregung um seine Rasse mitbekommt.
