This is a special blog post. In addition to the free downloads, there is a whole library to buy. That library was recorded together with “Bulldogs for Kids e.V.” who gave me a ride on their Claas Lexion 530 harvester. 70% of the revenue will benefit the non-profit association and thus a good cause, because they support children in need. But now to the actual story. On  Sep.  9th 2018 the club will hold a big tractor meeting on the premises of Bischoff in Essen – Heidhausen. It is not only for your whole family to enjoy themselves and all the income is forwarded to children in need, no, there is also a tractor-beauty-contest, where the best sound is one crucial criteria. That was reason enough for me to inquire directly. Since the BfK team is super straightforward and just now all fields in the region were ripe at the same time, I was on my way to ride a harvester a few days later.

As I arrived at the field, I already heard a loud roar that drowned everything. Thus, the passing aircraft and the nearby highway weren’t a huge problem to my adventour. When the engine was turned off so I could board, I could already hear that the Claas Lexion 530 had done a great job. My feet crunched on the freshly cut stalks.

As soon as I was on board, we realized that the harvest was unfortunately still a bit too humid. The grain had 21% moisture and the max. tolerated is 15%. In advance, a hand sample had been made, which had yielded 14%, but unfortunately was probably not correct. So the session was interrupted before it started properly and we drove to a second field that unfortunately had to be left after a strip of mowing for the same reason. It was already half the time that I had planned and I did not really have something useful in the box yet.

At first I did not find the third and last field. But the grain was dry enough there and finally it really started. The ride on the giant was very impressive, especially since I was sitting on the platform, covered from top to bottom with straw and dust. They do not only make noise, but also produce a lot of dirt. What more do you want?

In addition to the squeaking of the steering wheel, the constant movements of the blades were the striking sound of the 500,000 Euro vehicle. So I had to go there. If the noise in the cabine, the cool of the air conditioning and the view of nature were still like meditation, the view from below was a completely different one. With the microphone on the boom pole I walked in front of and next to the machine. All of a sudden, it seemed much more threatening and the sounds became significantly louder (not actually, but in my mind).

At the edge of the field, I finally set up a few stationary microphones to listen to the eternal rhythm of harvesting away, coming towards me and the unloading on the nearby trailer.

An impressive experience and I can only highly recommend to visit the event on 09 Sep., if you live close to Essen and have a look & listen at the machine and many others. If you do not have the option, you can buy the library and get an impression.

Jetzt aber zur Geschichte. Am 09. Sep. 2018 wird der Verein auf dem Gelände der Firma Bischoff in Essen – Heidhausen ein großes Trekkertreffen veranstalten. Dabei kommt nicht nur die ganze Familie auf ihren Spass und alle Einnahmen  kommen auch noch Kindern in Not zu, nein, es gibt auch einen Trekker-Schönheits-Wettbewerb, bei dem u.a. der beste Sound entscheidend ist. Das war Grund genug für mich, dort mal direkt nachzufragen. Da das BfK Team super unkompliziert ist und zuällig gerade alle Felder gleichzeitig reif wurden, war ich wenige Tage später schon auf dem Weg um Mähdrescher zu fahren.

Am Feld angekommen, höret ich schon ein lautes Dröhnen, das alles übertönte. Somit wurden die vorbeifliegenden Flugzeuge und die nahe Autobahn schonmal nicht zu einem riesen Problem. Als der Motor abgestellt war, damit ich an Bord gehen konnte, hörte man schon, dass der Claas Lexion 530 ganze Arbeit geleistet hatte. Meine Füße knirschten auf den frisch geschnittenen Halmen.

Kaum war ich an Bord, mussten wir feststellen, dass die Ernte leider noch etwas zu feucht war. Das Getreide hatte 21% Feuchtigkeit und darf max. 15% haben. Im Vorhinein war eine Handprobe gemacht worden, die hatte 14% ergeben, war aber leider wohl nicht korrekt. Also wurde die Session unterbrochen, bevor sie richtig angefangen hatte und wir fuhren zu einem zweiten Feld, dass nach einem Streifen Mähen leider aus dem gleichen Grund verlassen werden musste. Jetzt war schon die Hälfte der Zeit um, die ich eingeplant hatte und ich hatte noch nicht wirklich was Brauchbares im Kasten.

Das dritte und letzte Feld habe ich zunächst gar nicht gefunden. Dort war das Getreide aber trocken genug und endlich ging es richtig los. Das Mitfahren auf dem Riesen war schon sehr beeindruckend, vor allem, da ich auf der Plattform sitzend von oben bis unten mit Stroh & Staub voll war. Die machen nicht nur Krach, auch Dreck. Was will man mehr.

Neben dem quietschen des Lenkrads waren vor allem die ständigen Bewegungen der Schneidemesser das markante Geräusch des 500.000 EUR teuren Gefährts. Also musste ich da mal ran. Waren die Geräusche in der Fahrerkabine, die Kühle der Klimaanlage und der Ausblick in die Natur noch wie Meditation, war der Blick von unten ein ganz anderer.

Mit dem Mikrofon am Boom Pole lief ich vor und neben der Maschine her. Auf einmal wirkte sie noch sehr viel bedrohlicher und die Geräusche wurden deutlich lauter.

Am Rand des Felds habe ich zum Schluss noch ein paar stationäre Mikrofone aufgebaut um dem ewigen Rhytmus vom Entfernen, auf mich zukommen und auf die bereitstehenden Anhänger Abladen zu lauschen.

Ein beeindruckendes Erlebnis und ich kann nur wärmstens empfehlen zu dem Event am 09. Sep. zu gehen, wenn ihr aus der Nähe von Essen seid und sich die Maschine einmal anzuschauen. Wer nicht die Möglichkeit hat, kann sich ja die Library kaufen und bekommt so einen Eindruck:
