Unfortunately, I had to cancel two recordings recentley, that I originally planned for the blog. So it went a little quiet around here. Now I had a recording scheduled for an installation (17.09. Essen Altendorf – Gruen Auf! Altendorf!) For this I had to record, among other things, a rowing boat. I decided to capture a few extra takes and turn it into a new post. The “Bootsverleih Kettwig” offers a lot of different boats for a trip on the lake. Canadians, pedal boats, electric boats and also exactly a nice squeaky rowing boat, as I was looking for.
The rental is located at the lake Kettwig-Stausee. This is indeed visually beautiful with the old railway bridge, but unfortunately during the opening times of the boat rental (11-19h) acoustically not optimal. This is where the railway regularly rattles over the said bridge, the river feels like it is almost the runway from the Düsseldorf airport, according to the noise from the airplanes in nice weather, the Werdener Str. runs here very close to the shore and there is a lot of construction going on. The sound in mid-side stereophony:

A few meters further up the river, however, it is quite (no pun intended) different. After the bend, which the Ruhr is making here, a dense tree line protects the banks on both sides, and the noise of the city disappears. In this glorious calm, and in the best weather, I have directed my shotgun mic towards one of the rudders to hear a little more of the water:

And to intensify the whole again, I have also attached a small lav-mic (DPA 4061) to one of the rudders. Since it is omni-directional (it records in all directions), it captured the squeaking of the oarlock as well.

Exactly for the opposing effect, if possible no water noise, I have attached a contact microphone at the bottom of the rowboat. Here, you can hear very well how much the material works with each row.

Finally, I wanted to explore how it really sounds like under water. What do the fish perceive from the activities on the water surface? The water is absolutely clear here, you can see in many places down to the bottom and between the plants are many groups of small fish.

Surprisingly, during this recording, I turned around and the river below sounded completely different, while above the water, there was no acoustic change. The constant bubbling-up of the current disappeared and made room for a few swirls. This recording I had to rise the volume properly to reach a comparable level. This is the way it sounded on my way back:

Leider musste ich zwei für den Blog geplante Aufnahmen absagen und so war es hier in letzter Zeit etwas still. Jetzt hatte ich den Auftrag für eine Installation Sounds aufzunehmen (17.09. Essen Altendorf – Grün Auf! Altendorf!) Dafür soll ich unter anderem ein Ruderboot aufnehmen und da habe ich die Gelegenheit genutzt zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe zu schlagen und gleich einen Blogbeitrag raus zu machen. Der Bootsverleih Kettwig bietet neben Canadiern, Tretbooten und Elektrobooten auch genau so ein schön knarziges Ruderboot an, wie ich es gesucht habe.

Der Bootssteg liegt am Kettwiger- Stausee. Dieser ist zwar optisch wunderschön mit der alten Eisenbahn-Brücker, aber leider zu den Öffnungszeiten des Bootsverleihs (11-19 Uhr) akustisch nicht optimal. Hier rattert regelmäßig die Eisenbahn über die besagte Brücke, gefühlt ist der Stausee beinah die Landebahn vom Düsseldorfer Flughafen, so laut sind die Flugzeuge bei schönem Wetter, die Werdener Str. verläuft hier lautstark nah zum Ufer und aktuell wird auch noch gebaut. Das ganze klang in m/s Stereofonie dann so:

Wenige Meter weiter allerdings verhält es sich ganz anders. Nach dem Knick, den die Ruhr hier Flußaufwärts macht, säumt zu beiden Seiten ein dichter Baumbestand die Ufer und lässt den Lärm der Stadt verschwinden. In dieser herrlichern Ruhe und bei bestem Wetter habe ich mein Richtmikro auf eines der Ruder ausgerichtet, um etwas mehr vom Wasser zu hören:

Und um das ganz nochmal zu intensivieren, habe ich auch noch ein kleines Lavalier Mikro (DPA 4061) an eines der Ruder geklebt. Da es allerdings Omni-Direktional ist (in alle Richtungen aufnimmt) hört man auch das Quietschen der Dolle sehr gut.

Genau für den gegenläufigen Effekt, also möglichst gar keine Wassergeräusche, habe ich ein Kontaktmikrofon am Boden des Ruderboots angebracht. Hier kann man durch den Körperschall mal sehr gut wahrnehmen wie sehr das Material bei jedem Ruderzug arbeitet.

Zuletzt wollte ich noch erforschen, wie es eigentlich unter Wasser so klingt. Was nehmen wohl die Fische von den Aktivitäten an der Wasseroberfläche wahr? Das Gewässer ist hier absolut klar, man kann an vielen Stellen bis auf den Grund sehen und zwischen den Pflanzen sind viele kleine Fischschwärme zu erblicken.

So klangen die Ruderschläge mit meinem Hydrofon aufgenommen:

Erstaunlicher Weise drehte ich während dieser Aufnahme um und Flussabwärts klang die Unterwasserwelt völlig anders, während oberhalb des Wassers keine akustische Veränderung wahrzunehmen war. Das gegen den Strom auftretende ständige Geblubber verschwand und machte einzelnen Wirbeln platz. Diese Aufnahme musste ich ordentlich in der Lautstärke anheben um auf ein vergleichbares Level zu kommen. So hörte es sich auf dem Rückweg an:
