To be honest, I’m not a particularly big fan of keeping farm animals. It wouldn’t be necessary for my personal life, but of course I’m still fascinated by the numerous animals. For my project on the return of the wolf to the Ruhr region, I examined one type of grazing animal. It was my first time looking closely at the vocal variations in sheep.

Surprisingly, I hadn’t previously given much thought to how different the various breeds of sheep might sound. But when I recorded the Scottish Black Face sheep, which sounds like a burping zombie, it was clear that I wanted to make up for this omission. Then I listened to the Soay sheep, one of the oldest forms of domestic sheep, and realised that the calls sounded just as old as the origin of this form.

And by then I was sure that I wanted to extend my research to other farm animals. The enormous variety of chickens and cattle is hard to get to grips with quickly and might take some years, so I put together a very special sound selection with a few early highlights of my research as a collection.

And of course a very special thank you goes to all the farm animal owners who let me record on their land. In addition to the sounds of the animals and their characters and idiosyncrasies, it is also the conversations with the people involved that give me great pleasure and often allow me to engage intensively with the animal in the first place thanks to their profound knowledge.

Nevertheless, I don’t want to emphasise individual farms here, as I usually do with tips for excursions. That’s why there’s no map in this post. But there is a nice free download, a recording straight from the henhouse. And here is a demo with exemplary sounds from the collection of Essens (and one Alpine) farm animals:

Ich bin ehrlich, ich bin kein besonders großer Fan von Farmtierhaltung. Für mein eigens Leben wäre es nicht nötig, aber trotzdem üben die zahlreichen Tiere natürlich eine große Faszination auf mich aus. Für mein Projekt über die Rückkehr des Wolfs ins Ruhrgebiet habe ich mich erstmals näher mit einer Art der Weidetiere beschäftigt, mit den Schafen.

Erstaunlicherweise hatte ich mir zuvor nicht riesige Gedanken dazu gemacht, wie unterschiedlich die verschiedenen Schafs-Rassen klingen mögen. Aber spätestens als ich das Scottish Black Face Schaf aufnahm, das im Klang einem rülpsendem Zombie gleicht, war klar, dass ich dieses Versäumnis nachholen wollte. Dann belauschte ich das Soay Schaf, eine der ältesten Formen des Hausschafs, und stellte fest, dass die Geräusche sich genau so alt anlassen wie der Ursprung dieser Form.

Und an dem Zeitpunkt war spätestens sicher, dass ich meine Untersuchungen auch auf andere Farm Tiere ausweiten will. Die enorme Vielfalt bei Hühnern und Rindern ist nicht mal schnell zu bewältigen und so habe ich erstmal eine ganz besondere Auswahl, mit so einigen Highlight als Sammlung zusammen gestellt.

Und natürlich geht ein ganz besonderer Dank an all die WeidetierhalterInnen, die mich auf ihrem Gelände rekorden lassen haben. Neben den Lauten der Tiere und ihren Charakteren und Eigenarten, sind es auch die Gespräche mit den damit verbundenen Menschen, die mir eine riesen Freude bereiten und mir mit ihrem tiefgründigem Wissen oft überhaupt erst eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Tier erlauben.

Trotzdem will ich hier ungerne einzelne Höfe hervorheben, wie ich es sonst bei Ausflugstipps tue. Daher gibt es bei diesem Post keine Karte.
